Giving Blood and Running
August 27th, 2006 | 5 Comments »I have a dilemma. I'm a dedicated blood donor. Have been since I was 17. I lost track sometime ago, but I'm probably up to something like 13 gallons donated. Probably a bit more. I'm in good health, and even found out last time I donated that I'm not carrying this small but common virus that people pick up at birth. That means my blood can go to infants as well as adults.
All well and good.
But every time I donate, it takes me two weeks, sometimes more, to get back to my running. It sets me back that much. I'm good for most anything 24 hours after the donation. Just not running. I asked my last doctor about it, and he said it had to do with the red blood cells. Those take longer to regenerate than the volume lost. With fewer red blood cells, the body has a harder time getting oxygen to my limbs, so I end up having to breath harder, and my legs cramp faster. Basically I'm anemic for two weeks.
I hate taking two weeks off from running. I don't like running, but it is something that the Air Force says I must do to prove I'm "fit." 1
So there it is. They're calling me again. Desparate need for my type. Can you come on in? And I'm putting off calling back, 'cause I'm just making a bit of progress with the running2
My gut instinct is to give up the donation… For now. Get much better at running, and perhaps the loss of blood won't bother me as much down the line.
But they keep calling…
Urgle.
